Richmond, KY, has excellent fishing spots where anglers can reel in a large variety of fish species. The Kentucky River and the various lakes are easily accessible from parks and marinas that offer boat ramps and fishing piers.

1. Kentucky River

The Kentucky River holds many fish species, including largemouth, smallmouth, hybrid striped, white, spotted bass, channel, blue, and flathead catfish, bluegill, walleye, crappie sauger, and muskellunge.

The most convenient way to access the river near Richmond is from Fort Boonesborough State Park, which offers year-round kayak and canoe access and loan fishing poles at the campground grocery store. Another good river access spot is Poosey Ridge Boat Ramp on Poosey Ridge Road.

2. Lake Reba

The 75-acre Lake Reba in Richmond is an excellent spot to hook redear sunfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, channel, blue, and flathead catfish. You can fish from the shore, a boat, or the fishing pier. Keeper size blue catfish must be 12 inches or over. Small and largemouth bass must be over 12 inches, and only six per angler is allowed. The limit for redear sunfish is 20 of any size.

The lake is easily accessible from Camp Catalpa Park at 2200 Catalpa Loop Road on the east side of the lake and Lake Reba Park at 299 Lake Reba Drive. Lake Reba Park has a fishing pier, boat ramp, and a fish cleaning station and is open from 8 a.m. until it gets dark. However, the park does offer 24/7 access to the Lake from May to November.

3. White Hall Park Lake

The 5.6-acre Whitehall Park Lake in Whitehall Park is part of the Fishing in the Neighborhoods (FINS) program. The lake holds sunfish and largemouth bass and is stocked four times a year with keeper-size catfish and in spring and fall with rainbow trout. Keeper largemouth bass must be 15 inches or over, and only one is allowed per angler. The limit for rainbow trout is 5, channel and blue catfish is 4, and bluegill and other sunfish combined is 15.

Grass carp are stocked to control the aquatic vegetation and must be released when caught. Fishing is permitted in the lake only during daylight hours, and no boating is allowed. Whitehall Park is at the end of White Hall Shrine Road.

4. Wilgreen Lake

The 141.7-acre Wilgreen Lake provides fantastic fishing opportunities and is accessible all year round from the marina. The lake holds redear and green sunfish, largemouth bass, white crappie, white sucker, bluegill, channel catfish, and carp.

The lake is designated an ‘idle speed only’ boating lake, and statewide fishing regulations apply. Please look on the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife website for more information on sizes and limits. The marina on Wilgreen Lake Road is open from March to December and offers boat rentals.

The fishing waters mentioned here are monitored by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. Anglers 16 and over must have a Kentucky Fishing License to fish in the rivers and lakes. Visit Gates Nissan of Richmond today.
