1. Fort Boonesborough State Park

Visit the site where Daniel Boone and his men arrived at the Kentucky River on April 1, 1775, and wasted no time establishing Fort Boonesborough, Kentucky’s second settlement. Today, the reconstructed working fort at 4375 Boonesboro Road in Richmond showcases cabins, blockhouses, and furnishings. Resident artisans bring the fort to life with craft demonstrations, giving visitors the opportunity to experience 18th-century life.

At the museum, you can delve deeper into the lives of the pioneering families who lived and toiled along the river and buy handcrafted pioneer items at the gift shop. Fort Boonesborough State Park also offers a variety of recreational activities, including boating to view the Palisades, fishing in the Kentucky River, cooling off in the Olympic-sized pool, and overnighting at the scenic campground on the banks of the river.

2. White Hall State Historic Site

The Historic White Hall mansion at 500 White Hall Shrine Road in Richmond was home to the Clay family, notable figures in American history. The impressive 45-room Georgian and Italianate-style mansion was built as a Georgian brick house in 1799 by General Green Clay, Kentucky’s largest land and slave owner. He passed the house on to his son, Cassius Marcellus Clay, a politician, emancipationist, and ambassador to Russia.

His wife, Mary Jane, expanded the house while he was away and added the Italianate style in the 1860s, turning it into a sprawling 10,000-square-foot mansion. Their daughter, Laura, became the first president of the Kentucky Woman Suffrage Association in 1888 and remained president until 1912 when it was named the Kentucky Equal Rights Association (KERA). Today, White Hall is a museum that offers guided tours and hosts several events yearly.
